I wrote a really nice ELI5 version a while back, but I can't seem to find it anymore. I can't remember exactly, but I think DA:O is similar. If there is X amount of enemies around the character you can make him use Whirlwind. Say going below X amount of Mana/Stamina you can then use a Mana/Stamina potion. There are many different conditions you can set up and then say which ability/spell you want the character to cast when those conditions are met. Since there is two conditions this actually takes up two tactic slots. This causes the Healer to cast Heal on any character going below 20% or healing itself when he/she goes below 50%. For example the standard Heal tactic is to heal others when they are below 20% health or itself when it is below 50%. Basicly if you want good tactics you must pick Combat Tactics that gives you more tactic slots in Origins/Awakening.Д®itherway in tactics you set conditions for the character to use an ability. In Dragon Age 2 you don't really have a limit at the beginning or at least not the same limit, while on Dragon Age: Origins/Awakening you are limited to what rank of Combat Tactics you have.
